Navy ships leave Halifax Harbour destined for Haiti

Loaded with supplies, two Canadian warships left Halifax Thursday afternoon for Haiti.
“We’re extremely proud of the work they’ve done thus far in preparation for this mission,” said Defence Minister Peter MacKay at the Halifax dockyard prior to the ships’ departure.
“They were called upon very quickly and so to them and their families we’re extremely appreciative.”
HMCS Athabaskan and HMCS Halifax left Halifax Harbour at 3 p.m. sharp and are on their way to provide help for that country’s earthquake victim.
MacKay says this is a very important mission for the Canadian military, and the supplies the ships carry are desperately needed.
“So aboard both of these vessels we have water, we have water purification systems, we have food, we have clothing, blankets, basic provisions essentially,” he said.
“Some shelter, there are tents and al of this is meant to be delivered as quick as possible.”
The more than 500 military personnel on the ships will arrive in Haiti in five days.
