South End fire ruled an accident

The Halifax fire department says the South Street fire that damaged three restaurants and left a number of tenants homeless Tuesday, was accidental.
“The area of origin was a wall void space in a closet down in the first floor of the building,” says Dave Meldrum with the Halifax Regional Fire Department.
“They also found the ignition source was electrical wiring in that space so our team is classifying this fire as accidental in nature.”
However, due to the extent of the fire damage, they aren’t sure exactly what the electrical problem was.
Meanwhile restaurant owners are still figuring out their next step and when they’ll be able to re-open.
Meldrum also tells News95.7 that a New Years Day fire at a Portland Street rooming house and apartment building was also accidental.
Although they’re unsure of what actually started the fire, Meldrum says it originated in the kitchen and living room area of one of the apartments.
