Schools closing due to snowstorm

Schools are closing across the province due to a snowstorm that’s already hit the southern regions.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement about a low-pressure system that will bring snow and high winds to Nova Scotia.
News 95.7 meterologist Richard Zurawski says we can expect 10 to 15 cm of snow beginning this morning.
“It looks like the southern shore and eastern shore of Nova Scotia is going to bear the brunt of this,” he said. “You’re looking at blowing snow and drifting snow and it’s going to last a good 24 hours.”
Winds are expected to hit about 50 km an hour, which could mean whiteout conditions on the roads. Zurawski says the temperature will complicate things further.
“The temperature’s going to be hovering just around the freezing mark, the overnight temperature’s down to about -3 or -4, so it’s going to be atypically mild,” he said. “And that, of course, means slushy snow, it means heavy snow, which makes it difficult to get rid of.”
The following is a list of closures and cancellations for January 20, 2010. This information is updated as it is received.
– South Shore Regional School Board has closed all schools (Queen’s, Lunenburg counties.)
– Tri-County Regional School Board has closed all schools (Digby, Yarmouth, Shelburne counties.)
– Annapolis Valley Regional School Board has closed all schools (Hants West, Kings, Annapolis counties.) The regional office and work sites are open.
– Ecole de la Rive Sud in Blockhouse is closed for the day.
– CSAP schools in Clare and Argyle are closed for the day.
– Chignecto-Central Regional School Board has closed schools in Hants East for the day.
