Prorogation prompts protests in Halifax, nation-wide

Rallies to protest the proroguing of Parliament are planned across the country today, including in downtown Halifax. Hundreds are expected to gather outside Province House a 1 p.m., to protest Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s proroguing of Parliament.
30 rallies against prorogation are schedules across the country.
The demonstrations have the support of Peter Stoffer, the New Democrat MP for Sackville-Eastern Shore. Speaking on Maritime Morning with Andrew Krystal, Stoffer said he suspects a few reasons why the Conservatives sent MPs home.
“To be completely frank with you, is that they’ve prorogued Parliament because they really don’t want to hear from Canadians,” Stoffer said. “It’s always a scary thing when the Prime Minister of Canada says that the markets don’t like basic democracy.”
“I find that very, very disturbing for him to say that,” Stoffer said.
Stoffer points to more than 30 bills that have been stopped short, as well as questions about Haiti, the recession and Afghan detainees. Stoffer says that those need to be dealt with.
