Full moon could cause big waves

Our recent blast of winter weather has the potential to bring big waves and flooding to coastal areas tonight. Nova Scotia’s coastal regions saw erosion and flooding following our first storm of the season, January 2. That was during a full moon.
Meteorologist Richard Zurawski explains conditions are similar tonight and we should expect high tides.
“You’re looking at coastal erosion and you’re looking at the threat of damage along the coastal areas because of the storm surge, because of the wind and coupled with the high tide. That’s something we have to increasingly be aware of,” Zurawski told News 95.7.
He said if today’s storm had been stronger, we could have expected an even greater effect on coastal areas, but that is not due to be the case.
“This low pressure system is not as deep,” he explains.
While the moon’s close proximity to the Earth is one reason for the extreme pull on the tides, Zurawski also points to storms becoming stronger in recent years.
