Police crack down on illegal ATV activity

Drivers of all-terrain vehicles kept police busy over the weekend.

Cst. Brian Palmeter says most ATV users are responsible, however a few are not, and that has resulted in an increase in complaints.

He says Halifax Regional Police, RCMP and the Department of Natural Resources went patrolling on the weekend in the Williamswood-Sambro Loop area, and nabbed a few scofflaws.

“A number of officers were out doing some enforcement on illegal ATVs and as a result of their efforts they were able to stop and charge five different people for a variety of offenses,” says Palmeter.

The culprits were charged with driving through a wilderness area, driving an off-highway vehicle on a highway, not displaying a license plate, and removing a sign in a wilderness area.

The effort is in response to an increase in complaints from local residents about noise and the hours that ATVs roar through nearby woods.

Palmeter says police will be on patrol again this weekend, though he wouldn’t say where.

“We’re going to be out there and the fines are very severe and if they continue to use their machines illegally they should expect to have some run-ins with police and perhaps be the subject of a very significant fine,” says Palmeter.
