Nova Scotia needs more accountability: taxpayers group

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says it’s clear there needs to be better accountability of how tax dollars are spent in Nova Scotia.

Kevin Gaudet with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says transparency breeds accountability.

He says the report certainly highlights the need for more accountability from Nova Scotia’s provincial politicians. And says you wouldn’t see this happening in the private sector.

“There’s accountability controls up the wazoo anybody with a job in the private sector is painfully aware of how hard it would be to buy a coach for your house or pay your brother to give you a picture frame or whatnot,” says Gaudet.

Cape Breton University political science professor Dr. Tom Urbaniack says this is something people won’t soon forget.

“All three parties are implicated, this is something the public understands,” says Urbaniak.

“People just look at this and they can’t believe that it would cost more than $2000 for a laptop, or that there’s a generator hooked up to somebody’s house,” says Ubaniack.

He says the scandal points to the need for stricter accountability controls.
