Councillors debate name change

Regional council is thinking about changing the name of Halifax Regional Municipality – again.
One of the ideas being thrown around is ‘Greater Halifax’.
Dartmouth Centre councillor Gloria McCluskey says she thought Tuesday night’s proposal was a way to simply suggest unofficial names.
“And then before we knew it, if we buy a new piece of equipment we’ll put Greater Halifax on it,” says McCluskey.
“No we won’t.”
McCluskey says changing the city’s name shouldn’t be up to councillors.
“Shouldn’t people have some say in this? People in Ecum Secum?” says McCluskey.
Lester Pye, a resident of Ecum Secum agrees.
“No, I want to be known as Ecum Secum and leave it at that. Stop wasting taxpayers’ dollars,” says Pye.
Meanwhile, McCluskey says she likes the sound of Greater Dartmouth.
