A representative for a small business advocacy group says some of the expenses submitted by MLAs – and approved – probably wouldn’t fly in the private sector.
“(It’s) just shocking when you see the list of things like the TVs, the computers, the cameras and even some of the unusual things,” says Judith Andrew with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.
She says buying some of these items and getting them approved are ‘foreign concepts’ to most business owners.
“There would be checks and balances, every penny is controlled carefully,” she said. “If you’ve got any expense account leeway, there would be guidelines.”
Andrew says her members are not happy with revelations of excessive expenditures when the province is mulling the option of a hike to the HST.
