The Better Business Bureau is issuing an updated warning about the ‘grandparents scam’.
The scam begins when someone calls a grandparent claiming to be their grandchild, they spin a story of either being in an accident or arrested for drugs.
Then they ask for money for repairs or bail. The calls seem to come from Montreal.
Don MacKinnon with the bureau in Halifax says in one recent U.S. case the grandparents lost a lot of money.
“These people were taken for a little over $19,000 before they wised up and did check with their children,” says MacKinnon.
An elderly Amherst woman recent fell victim losing $10,000.
MacKinnon says grandparents should keep their emotions in check when getting such a call and check out the facts with other family members first.
