While most of Canada is celebrating the start of the 2010 games in Vancouver there are those who are calling for Canadians to stop and consider the costs of hosting the Olympics.
The Olympic Awareness Network has scheduled a day of solidarity for Saturday afternoon in Victoria Park on Spring Garden Road.
The public demonstration will be a peaceful protest of what organizers are calling the corporatization of the event. They’re also concerned about the use of disputed aboriginal land, the cost to taxpayers, and the environmental cost.
Protest organizer Ashley Clayton says the Olympics aren’t what they used to be.
“Culture, environment, and sport, the Olympics used to be based on these three things,” she said. “Now it’s spiraling out of control, it’s a corporate circus essentially.”
There are rallies planned for other major cities. The Halifax protest runs Saturday afternoon from twelve until two.
