HRM approves city-wide curbside swaps

HRM has approved a new plan in hopes of keeping household goods out of the city’s garbage dumps.

Regional councillors have approved two curbside giveaway weekends for residents to put unwanted household items on the curb for any interested parties to take away.

The plan is to hold one giveaway in June and one in October.

Coun. Gloria McCluskey (Dartmouth Centre) presented the motion, telling Metro News one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.

She says the plan should help divert trash from landfills, as long as the public is educated about the rules.

Those rules state that homeowners must retrieve whatever is left over on the curb when the weekend is over.
