Gordon Lightfoot in good spirits over death hoax

Reports Thursday that Canadian singer-songwriter legend Gordon Lightfoot has died is a hoax.

“All the sudden my music is in heavy rotation,” laughed Lightfoot speaking with News 95.7 music reporter Rudy Blair.

“I’m fine, I’m in great health, I’m doing fine, I’m sitting in my office right now, the whole thing is a hoax.”

Lightfoot says he heard about his apparent demise on the radio. He says he has no idea how the whole thing started, but says the phones are ringing off the hook in his management office.

He’s set to embark on a North American tour that has an April 2 stop at the Halifax Metro Centre.

Canwest news service originally reported the singer had died. The Ottawa Citizen quoted fellow singer Ronnie Hawkins who said Lightfoot had died Wednesday night.

“It’s a pretty sick (prank) for someone to call, acting like they’re relatives,” Hawkins told News 95.7 Thursday.

Hawkins says he was told by his management office Thursday morning that Lightfoot had passed away.
