Resident escapes overnight house fire in Dartmouth

A resident managed to escape a large house fire in Dartmouth early this morning.
Halifax fire crews responded to a fire at 298 Portland Street around 3 p.m.
There was one person in the single family home, but they managed to escape the building before crews arrived.
Platoon Chief Gary McCurdy tells news 95-7 the fire began on the main floor of the house.
“The fire had vented out one of the windows prior to the first crews arrival, so they’re dealing with a fairly aggressive fire,” said McCurdy. “But it hadn’t reached the upper levels of the home and it hadn’t reached the walls or the ceiling at that point.”
McCurdy says they had it knocked down in just over two hours.
The fire caused smoke and heat damage through the entire home, and there’s some fire damage on the main level.
Fire investigators are on scene to determine a cause.
