Regional councillors will discuss a possible deal to settle the question of compensation for Africville today.
Several weeks ago, council agreed during an in-camera meeting to make an offer to the Africville Genealogical Society, which represents former residents and their descendants.
The Society accepted the offer this past weekend and it will be returned to city council tonight for ratification – though Mayor Peter says initially it will be debated behind closed doors.
“This is a legal document and an agreement yet to be acknowledged,” he said. “It may be involved in camera until it is able to be vetted fully by council.”
Kelly says it is possible the settlement could be debated in open session tonight after the closed door discussion.
The deal involves $3 million cash, a replica church and an interpretive centre on the site of what was once Africville.
