NS Power to ask for rate increase

Nova Scotia Power will apply for a rate increase next month, but the utility says it’s for the long-term benefit of Nova Scotians.
“It would see us invest about $42 million in 2011 in energy efficiency conservation programs,” says Alan Richardson with the utility. “In the 2010 plan it was about $22.6 million.”
The increase, which would amount to about $2 a month on customers’ bills, would go to help reduce electricity use and use energy more efficiently.
He says, although rates will go up, it’s worth it.
“It’s kind of like you insulate your basement,” says Richardson. “You do make an investment up front but then you save on your heating bill many years after that.”
Cheryl Ratchford with the Ecology Action Centre supports the plan, and says future energy policies should centre around better conservation.
“Because the savings that you can achieve are really dramatic,” says Ratchford.
Nova Scotia Power will seek approval April 19.
