An idea to change the words to O Canada is hitting a sour note with a lot of people.
The federal government said it would look at making one line more gender-neutral.
‘In all thy sons command’ is the line being pointed to. Critics claim it excludes women.
However Jennifer says our national anthem sounds pretty sweet as it is.
“I don’t think that there’s any need to change it historically, and it’s not that big of a deal from the wording perspective,” she says.
Even some politicians are in favour of the status quo. Downtown councillor Dawn Sloane says we really need to think about the cost of a change.
“All the books, all the immigration papers,” says Sloane. “So how much would it actually cost it might sound good, but on paper I bet it would be a tremendous amount of money.”
A parliamentary committee will look at changing the line to the original, 1908 wording — ‘thou dost in us command.’
