It’s the sixth time Halifax has hosted the Brier and Nova Scotia will be gunning for its fourth title. Halifax last hosted the Briar in 2003 when Alberta’s Randy Ferbey beat Nova Scotia’s Mark Dacey in the final. Over 158,000 people took in the event that year. At least as many, or more, are expected to attend in the coming week.
Former Olympic gold medalist Brad Gushue of Newfoundland has the best chance of the eastern Canadian teams to win this year’s Briar. But Ontario’s Glen Howard, Manitoba’s Jeff Stouton and Kevin Koe of Alberta will give him a run for the title. Ian Fitzner-Leblanc’s rink represents Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia’s Ian Fitzner Leblanc rink from Halifax’s Mayflower curling club opens up the tournament at 3 p.m. today against New Brunswick.
The tournament runs all week, culminating in Sunday’s final.
