Fatal fires take alarming jump in N.S.

The Red Cross is reporting an alarming increase in the number of fire deaths this year.
Ten people in Atlantic Canada have died in house or apartment fires in 2010, and five of them were in Nova Scotia.
At this time last year, just two people in Atlantic Canada had died in fires – neither of them in Nova Scotia.
Dan Bedell of the Red Cross tells CBC there’s typically a spike in home fires every winter, as people use space heaters or candles to stay warm without running up the heating bill.
He says there’s actually been 23 fewer fires in the Atlantic region this year, thanks to milder weather.
