HRM’s winter parking ban melts away

Parking on the street at night no longer means risking a big ticket on your windshield in the morning.
HRM’s overnight winter parking ban has been lifted.
The ban was scheduled to be lifted on Friday night, and the city’s traffic authority said as recently as last week he likely wouldn’t consider removing it any sooner.
Coun. Dawn Sloane (Downtown Halifax,) who was one of the ban’s most vocal opponents, says she’s delighted he changed his mind.
“The first thing that came to mind was ‘Yay!'” she said. “I’m very happy that they’re lifting it early because we have good weather, there’s no need to have a ban on if we don’t have any snow.”
HRM spokesperson Shaune MacKinlay tells News 95.7 the weather did play a factor in lifting the ban.
“We try to lift it accordingly and look at the weather forecast to make the decision to lift it as early as we possibly can while still providing for the clearing of roads, if there’s snow,” she said.
Even in a shortened season, the parking ban has been a big money-maker for the city.
More than 10,50 tickets were issued under this year’s winter parking ban. At $50 a ticket, that’s more than $525,000 in fines.
More than 18,000 tickets were handed out in the same time period last year, but the fine was just $25 a pop.
