The local story about a dog which has drawn international attention from animal rights activists could be concluded today.
The owner of Brindi the dog returns to court for sentencing on animal bylaw violations today – and Francesca Rogier’s sentence will determine Brindi’s fate.
Rogier was convicted earlier this month of letting her dog run free and attack others while under a muzzle order. Brindi was seized by the city after a third attack and has been living at the local SPCA shelter while Rogier battled the city in court.
The judge could decide today if the dog is put down, returned to Rogier, or given to a trainer.
Although the case has attracted attention from animal rights activists around the world, local residents weren’t as familiar with the case. However, when given the options, people on Spring Garden Road agreed there’s no need for Brindi to die.
Danielle says the dog should be spared.
“I think the trainer option would be the best,” she said. “I just think maybe they need to go with a different plan, someone else to train it.”
Bri said Rogier shouldn’t get the dog back.
“This is a special case in terms of maybe the owner not being responsible with raising the dog they had,” she said. “If it was a good trainer who took care of it and helped it live a better life, that sounds like a great option.”
But John says Rogier should have a chance to be reunited with Brindi.
“Take the dog to a trainer and if it turns out well give it back to the owner,” he said.
Rogier says she’ll ask for an adjournment so Brindi can have a behavioural assessment.
