A medical study at the IWK could help keep kids occupied this March break, while earning parents a little cash.
The study looks at how children’s feelings affect how they feel pain.
“Children basically put their hand in cold water,” says researcher Melanie Noel. “It’s kind of like dipping your hand in a cold lake.
She says one of the studies looks at how much being distracted, or focusing on the pain makes children feel.
“Children actually listen to a CD,” says Noel. “So an audio recording of either a distraction task or they listen to guided imagery.”
The studies are ongoing for the next year. The kids have to be healthy and between the ages of 8-14. The kids get a ‘junior scientist’ certificate, and the parents get cash.
