Travel advisory not detering Mexico-bound tourists

Recent violence in Mexico isn’t expected to turn Nova Scotians away from the popular tourist destination.
Canada’s foreign affairs department is asking Canadians not to travel to Juarez in northern Mexico. The alert comes after two Americans were shot to death in the city over the weekend.
“I don’t think it would have a direct effect of people changing their plans,” says Absolute Travel Vice-President Fred Mack. “It may (cause) some leeriness about travelling tot he Mexico area but we haven’t seen anything yet.”
He says the most popular destinations out of Halifax are Cancun and the Mayan Riveria, which is more than 2,000 kilometres from Juarez.
Erin Page with Carlson Wagonlit Brooks Travel says people should feel safe.
“There are tourist police in place at these destinations,” says Page. “They are there for your protection, they’re there to make you feel comfortable and make you have you enjoy your holiday.”
Flights to Mexico out of Halifax have not been affected.
