City Hall gets million-dollar makeover offer

Halifax City Hall is getting a million-dollar facelift.

The sandstone masonry on the national historic site is in lousy condition and just getting worse, according to a staff report going to regional councillors on Tuesday.

The building received an acid-steam cleaning in 1948 and a major restoration was carried out in 1982, but the report suggests the “parging, re-pointing and coating” of the sandstone did more harm than good.

Metro Halifax reports councillors will review a tender offer of just over $1 million on Tuesday. It’s the cheapest of four offers to complete the work, and covers the first phase of a three- or four-year project.

HRM received $1.3 million in stimulus cash for the work.
