Public input needed on future of Horseshoe Island

Halifax residents are invited to a meeting tonight to discuss the future of Horseshoe Island Park.
It’s a spit of land jutting into the Northwest Arm that’s been a popular gathering spot for people since Halifax’s earliest days.
Folklore has Halifax’s earliest settlers feasting with the natives on Horseshoe Island. Local historian Blair Beed says he’s not sure if that’s true, but he says it has been a popular gathering spot over the years.
Otherwise, Beed says it has little historical significance.
“No treaties were signed on the site, no great events in particular took place on the site,” he said. “It’s always just been a very pleasant place to observe the nature of the arm.”
Coun. Jennifer Watts (Connaught – Quinpool) says the city is considering improvements that include benches and better accessibility, especially for those confined to wheelchairs.
‘Possibly a little trail development so they’ll be able to move through the park and enjoy the waterfront,” she said. “We’re looking at perhaps a few trees to provide some shade for people who go there to have picnics or enjoy their time there with their friends or families.”
Tonight’s meeting starts at 7 at the St Andrews Recreaction Centre.
