Bill to curb MLA expenses tabled

The Nova Scotia government has introduced legislation to make spending by provincial politicians more open and accountable to the public.
The bill, tabled Friday, will create a new commission to oversee the process, replacing the current Internal Economy Board.
The commission will hold its meetings in public. Premier Darrell Dexter says he wants a system that the public can have confidence in.
“When looking for the best practices of other jurisdictions,” says Dexter. “It was obvious that the best way to ensure effective management, was to ensure openness, provide clear guidelines and ensure proper and regular audits.”
The legislation also creates an audit committee that will include two non-members of the house appointed by the province’s chief justice to oversee spending.
