Liberals want code of ethics for MLAs

Liberal leader Stephen McNeil is proposing amendments to the proposed legislation expected to tighten up MLA expenses rules.

McNeil says the keys points are a code of ethics for MLA’s and expanding the role of the province’s Conflict of Interest Commissioner to deal with ethical issues.

“Our amendments will focus on training for new MLAs and returning MLAs on ethical behaviour,” says McNeil. “(It will) spell out ethical behaviour in a clear and simple language and set out a process to deal with an alleged violation.”

He says these steps along with the government’s changes that include posting expenses online will help restore public trust.
