Home retrofit grant unceremoniously nixed

A program that gives homeowners cash for energy-efficient upgrades has been suddenly shut down.
The ecoENERGY Retrofit Program was closed off to new applicants as March 31.
Shelley Bellefontaine with Clean Nova Scotia says it’s been popular.
“Since we’ve been responsible for delivering this program (we’ve been) speaking to and helping over 5000 homeowners in this province alone,” says Bellefontaine.
The program gave homeowners up to $5000 for more energy efficient windows, toilets, and hot water tanks.
Sackville MP Peter Stoffer says the program’s end was a shocker.
“In the political world usually you send something out there to get the reaction of the public and if they react negatively then you sort of back off on it,” says Stoffer. “This is a complete shock to all of us.”
People who’ve already started the process will still get rebates until the end of march 2011.
