The cold weather is gone – but that means hordes of unwelcome guests will soon return to your backyard and your home.
Dave Holland of Braemar Pest Control says says ants, houseflies, earwigs and mosquitoes are all insects that go hand in hand with warmer weather.
He says a late frost could help control some of the populations, such as carpenter ants.
“They start to move out early in the spring sometimes and they get a false sense of hope,” he said. “Then a frost comes and it kills them, but we haven’t had that.”
He says ants are already causing some trouble in HRM.
“We’ve already got lots of ant calls starting to come in,” he said. “The sun is getting strong now, so it starts warming up people’s homes and businesses and the ants are just warming up and thinking it’s spring time.”
Holland says between the mild winter and early spring, we can expect more activity than normal from all bug populations.
He says flies will do well again this year, and he blames that largely on the popular green bins found in every home.
“Of course you get fruit flies, but there’s other flies showing up in businesses now, one we call a lesser house fly,” he said. “We never used to have that many of those around, but there’s lots of them. Flies are doing great!”
He says you shouldn’t hesitate to use insecticide but urges you to read the label as it can hurt the environment, or people.
