Police are crediting a sharp-eyed witness for helping lead them to an arrest in the case of a man who punched a three-year-old boy in the face.
Sgt. Bill Morris says an eyewitness called police to report the assault in a Portland Street Tim Horton’s just before 6 p.m. Saturday.
“The suspect and child had already left the scene,” he said. “Officers spoke to numerous people that had witnessed it, as well we seized video from the mall itself which captured the whole incident.”
The information helped police get a license plate number which was used to track down the owner and arrest him on Sunday.
A 37-year-old Darmoutn man faces a charge of assault and will appear in court at a later date.
Morris says police are grateful to the citizen who made the initial call.
“Child abuse is everybody’s duty to look after that, to report that to police and Child Services,” he said. “It’s great when the public steps up and helps us out and helps protect the children.”
Morris says the boy was checked out at the IWK and released with minor injuries. Child Services is now involved.
