Charges laid in Dartmouth courthouse throwdown

Nine people face changes in connection with a big Dartmouth courthouse brawl last month.
“They range in age from 18-52, they’re from North Preston, Dartmouth and Westphal,” says Theresa Rath with Halifax Police. “Eight of them face charges of assault and causing a disturbance and the remaining person faces charges of causing a disturbance and breach of conditions.”
The March 10 incident, which involved thirty people, erupted after a man was sentenced in connection with a weapons case.
The fight prompted the Crown Attorney’s Association to file a workplace safety complaint.
Association spokesperson Rick Woodburn says the department of justice is sitting on its hands.
“My understanding is that the government believes the court house to be safe,” says Woodburn.
Meanwhile, he says 1600 weapons have been seized at the Halifax courthouse on Spring Garden Road since a metal detector was installed in October 2008.
