Expenses watchdog steps down

The MLA expense scandal has taken another casualty in an unexpected way.
Art Donahoe, the former Speaker of the Nova Scotia Legislature and the man in charge of curbing MLA expenses, has quit.
Donahoe, who is in Florida, emailed the current Speaker to tender his resignation.
In the email he tells Charlie Parker his report is unnecessary since it would be redundant.
Parker says Donahoe’s withdrawal seems reasonable.
“He did say though that he is available for consultation or advice at any point in time when he gets back to Nova Scotia,” says Parker. “But by mid-May when get arrives back here most of the work will already be finished and in place. He just felt that at this point it was just best for him to withdraw.”
A bill was introduced last month which would see the creation of an audit committee and the replacement of the internal economy board.
The changes should already be in place by the time Donahoe returns and the internal economy board to which he reports will no longer exist.
Donahoe says he does not want to be paid for the work he has done to date.
