Fuming over the tax increase

The talk show phone lines were hot on the topic of taxes as listeners reacted to the news the HST is going up by two percentage points.
Nova Scotia Finance Minister Graham Steele, a guest on News 95.7’s Maritime Morning with Andrew Krystal Wednesday, got some immediate public feedback on his budget.
There was one caller, Brad, who gave the tax increase a thumbs up.
“I don’t actually have a problem with the 15 per cent,” he said.
But after that, people let the province’s moneykeeper know where they stood.
“It’s so easy to raise taxes and sit in your crystal palaces up there and not really know what’s going on,” says Patrick.
Another caller, Rick, wonders about the NDP’s campaign promise not to raise taxes.
“They didn’t have a mandate for this so how are they getting away with it?” he asks. “They didn’t campaign on a two percent increase, now did they?”
Casey, who recently moved to Nova Scotia, came here hearing it was the promised land.
“The fact of the matter is, with personal income tax exemptions, property taxes, and everything else this is nowhere near the promised land,” he says.
One Beaverbank man says he and his wife are planning to leave Nova Scotia after learning what is contained in the budget.
