HST unpopular online

Thousands of Nova Scotians are signing on to sign an online petition against the two per cent hike in Harmonized Sales Tax. The hike is proposed as part of the New Democrat’s 2010 budget.
Mark Lecuyer represents the online group Nova Scotians Against an HST Increase and the Facebook page Taxed Enough Nova Scotians.
“We are taxed to death. Absolutely, in all the major categories we’re in the top three,” said Lecuyer pointing to corporate, small business and personal income tax.
Lecuyer tells News 95.7 the timing is bad as people have also been hit with pay freezes, pay cuts, and job losses in from the recession.
Premier Darrell Dexter says he hasn’t had any congratulations on the hike but people have said some aspects of the budget are long overdue, such as taking the HST off children’s clothing.
Finance Minister Graham Steele says he understand an increase is not popular, but wants to know what other options people might suggest to bring the province back into balance.
“That’s the real debate we need to have, but debate is good,” said Steele.
