Church dance becomes street fight

Two young men are facing charges after a dance turned into a street brawl.
It happened on Friday night at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church at 38 Purcell’s Cove Road.
Police were called to the church at around 11 last night after a 16-year-old boy allegedly attacked a security guard while being escorted off the property. He’s now charged with assault and causing a disturbance
The violence continued to intensify forcing organizers to shut down the dance early.
When police arrived several hundred young people had spilled into the parking lot and onto Purcell’s Cove Road.
Staff Sergeant Barb Saunders describes what happened next.
“The dance had been shut down and the youth were leaving,” she said. “There were fights amongst the youth again out on the street and the police were just trying to break that up.”
Nine men aged 14-17 were arrested during the brawl including one 17-year-old who’s now facing charges of assaulting police and resisting arrest after an officer was punched in the face.
The other seven will not face any charges.
