Sharing plants means more ants: councillor

As gardening season gets growing in Halifax, one municipal councillor is urging residents to be vigilant about their lawns and yards.

Jennifer Watts speaks to the ongoing European fire ant problem which is spreading in HRM.

“People really need to be careful that they don’t offer neighbours or family or friends plants,” she said. “They should buy their plants from a reputable place that understands the impact of fire ants and that those locations are being vigilant themselves in terms of the possibility of having fire ants in the area.”

Watts says sharing plants or soil can mean transporting the stinging pest to other parts of the municipality.
