Inmate’s mother demands explanation for suicide

The mother of a man who died in the Burnside jail says her son killed himself – and she wants to know how it could have happened.

Bertha MacIntyre tells CBC she’s hired a lawyer and is demanding a full report into the death of her son.

Daniel Nowogorski was found dead in his cell on the weekend and an internal review is underway.

The death has the Liberals calling on the justice minister to notify the public when an inmate commits suicide.

Police and the media don’t typically report such cases, but Liberal critic Michel Samson tells Metro Halifax, prisoners are supposed to be monitored – and if someone’s able to take their own life, the public needs to know what went wrong.
