Regional council has again deferred debate on raising parking rates in downtown Halifax and Dartmouth.
Coun. Sue Uteck (Northwest Arm-South End) says she doesn’t think it would be smart business to be increasing parking rates at this time.
Staff is recomending an increase of 50 cents an hour, which raise hourly rates to $2 in downtown Halifax and $1.50 in downtown Dartmouth.
The increase would raise an additional $500,000, which the city badly needs to help overcome a $30 million deficit.
Business representatives told council on Tuesday night higher rates would discourage consumers from going downtown.
Metro Halifax reports councillors sent the issue back to staff to look into possible alternatives.
