Union leader calls for boycott

The head of the largest public sector union in the province is urging her members to take a stand against certain businesses.
NSGEU President Joan Jessome is asking union members to boycott businesses that are part of the Nova Scotia Chamber of Commerce or the Restaurant and Foodservice Association.
She says both of the associations targeted the public sector.
“They need to start asking the people that are providing those goods and services, do they support public sectors and public services,” says Jessome. “If they don’t, then they need to walk out of those establishments.”
The Nova Scotia Chamber of Commerce and Atlantic Canadian Restaurant and Food Services Association criticized the provincial budget, recommending government cut itself instead of raising HST.
Tim Tucker, Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Chamber of Commerce, says they’re above this.
“While we were trying to raise the level of debate, Joan Jessome talked about a 19th century tactic of boycotting businesses,” says Tucker.
He says he’s not trying to get in a fighting match, he’s just saying the current system isn’t sustainable.
“Boycotting anything won’t help anyone,” says Tucker.
