Mother of dead infant pleads guilty

A Halifax woman has pleaded guilty to a charge relating to the death of her baby girl last July.
Jane Gomes, 23, has pleaded guilty to the included offense of failing to provide the necessities of life.
Peter Mancini, Gomes’ lawyer, says her two manslaughter charges have been dropped.
“Allegations that Ms. Gomes was in any way responsible for the death of her child, those charges have been withdrawn,” says Mancini
Crown lawyer Denise Smith won’t say how long of a sentence she’ll seek.
“With the matter pending before the court it wouldn’t be appropriate to get into the details of that at this time,” says Smith
Meanwhile Gomes has been released from custody with a number of conditions, which include no contact with her boyfriend Ashiqur Rahman.
Mancini says Gomes has had a difficult time in custody for the past nine months.
“It’s been a long road for her, she will have some adjusting to do when she gets out but I think she’s looking forward to it.”
Rahman still faces a manslaughter charge, which alleges he caused the death of their seven-week-old daughter.
The Crown says Gomes will be asked to testify against Rahman if his case goes to trial.
