Patient backlogs prompt Code Census at two hospitals

A backup at two metro emergency rooms resulted in two more code censuses on Monday.
The measure had to be used at both the QEII and the Dartmouth General due to backlogs of patients waiting to be seen.
By Monday afternoon there were nine admitted patients at the QEII waiting for beds, and two ambulances waiting to drop off patients.
By 5 p.m – after the code was called – all nine patients had beds.
A code census is called when space is needed in the ER for new patients.
Hospital spokesperson John Gillis tells the Herald the reason for the rush is unclear.
