Board, agency candidates may be more open to scrutiny

The Dexter government may be open to a change in the way major government appointments are made.
Currently the government only reveals the winner of a competition for a position on an agency board, or commission.
Members of the all-party human resources committee say they want to see the resumes of all applicants to make sure the best qualified person got the job.
The issue came up yesterday when the committee was asked to name Sherry Porter as the new chair of the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation.
Liberal MLA Michel Samson asked to postpone the appointment so the committee could see the resumes of the other 35 applicants.
The committee wouldn’t agree to that – but it did agree to look into getting more information in future.
