HRM homeowners will get tax break for fire damage

A little relief is on the way for Halifax homeowners hit by fire.
The city has approved to a tax break for those whose homes have been destroyed or heavily damaged in the past 16 months.
Councillor Russell Walker tells the Herald eligible residents will have to pay tax on the lot and foundation but not the house, because as he puts it, the house is not there anymore.
Coun. Steve Adams (Spryfield-Herring Cove) says the city is doing the right thing, noting some of his constituents have been plagued by problems since losing homes in the wildfires last spring.
But Coun. Darren Fisher (East Dartmouth-The Lakes) worries other homeowners may come looking for tax relief if they lose their homes in a storm.
