An annual look at the most liveable cities in Canada does not include Halifax – or any other Nova Scotia community among the top 10.
But two New Brunswick cities made the cut.
MoneySense magazine has released its annual study of 179 Canadian cities of more than 10,000 people, which ranks Ottawa-Gatineau tops on the list for livability.
Editor Duncan Hood tells Canada AM the study in the magazine’s latest issue, available this week, looks at several factors relevant to residents – not tourists.
“What we care about is, how much can you make?” he said. “What kind of jobs can you get? How much does it cost to buy a house? How many doctors are available, what kind of infrastructre is there?”
By that criteria, Ottawa is the most liveable city in Canada while Fredericton and Moncton came in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Halifax was ranked 14th in 2009, but didn’t appear in the top 10 this year.
Other major cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver weren’t included either, mostly due to skyrocketing housing prices.
