Minister looks for more powers over residential centres

The minister of community services will have a lot more power over homes for residents with special needs once changes to a bill happen.
Denise Peterson-Rafuse points to a series of abuses cases at the Riverview Adult Residential Centre last fall.
“It was very frustrating I have to tell you as the community services minister,” says Peterson-Rafuse. “We weren’t getting at the central core of the problem and what could we do about it.”
She says they really need the authority to pull licenses in cases such as Riverview.
Changes to the law will allow the minister to repeal or suspend a centre’s license and appoint an administrator to take over the daily operations.
