Tips for a trouble-free May 2-4 weekend

As Haligonians enjoy the first long weekend of nice weather, police have a few things to think about before you make the trek out of town.
You can bet there’s a burglar or two out there thinking about all the people leaving town this weekend, leaving Cst. Brian Palmeter with Halifax police to dole out some advice.
“Things like making sure your house is being looked after, your grass is cut if you’re away for an extended period of time, your mail or papers are being collected,” says Palmeter.
He also says it’s good to have your lights on timers.
Police as usual will be on the lookout for drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
And although the forest fire index is low, John Ross at the Natural Resources Department says it could quickly change this weekend.
“With the type of weather that is being forecast for the weekend it sounds like pretty good drying conditions so it won’t take long for the forest to dry out again.”
Also if you’re wondering about what’s opened, there’s no worries. Malls and grocery stores are open Monday and if your garbage day is Monday it will be picked up as usual.
