School discipline troubles come to the forefront

Former Graham Creighton principal Ken Fells, and his run-in with a student, has a lot of people talking about discipline in our schools.

Gary Carson teaches at a private school but he used to work in the public system where he says staff are under enormous pressure.

“And I could see a principal or teacher breaking down and lashing out because of frustration,” says Carson.

Nova Scotia Teachers’ Union president, Alexis Allen, says our schools are very different now than a few decades ago.

“The times have definitely changed and overall in society in general,” says Allen. “I think students think they know more of their rights in a sense.”

Carson says he thinks part of the problem is that there are no real consequences for students.
