Red Cross officials say we’re off to a ‘scary’ start to the swimming and boating season.
Atlantic Canada usually averages about 25 drownings a year, however it’s only early June and the region has seen 15 deaths already.
Aileen Nauss with the Red Cross says every one of the victims has been male.
“They are one of the highest risk groups,” she says.
However, she says the organization is unsure how they can get the message across.
“I don’t know, we have tried everything,” says Nauss.
In a bit of a twist the Red Cross is resorting to asking women to talk some sense into reckless males.
“To remind your guys if they’re going out fishing or whatever to put a PFD on,” she says. “Make sure that every trip is a return trip.”
None of the 15 victims was wearing a Personal Flotation Device. Nauss says that’s 15 deaths that could have been prevented.
