Maritimers dug deep for the IWK again this year.
The annual telethon wrapped up on Sunday night with a record-setting $5.4 million in donations.
That beats last year’s total by about $10,000.
Mike Elgie with CTV Atlantic says it shows, once again, the remarkable generosity of Maritimers.
“We’re coming out of a recession and the Maritimers don’t seem to know that,” he said. “They’re acting like they always do in being incredibly generous.”
Robbie Shaw, president and CEO of the IWK Health Centre Foundation, says the money will be used to fund equipment, research and programs.
“The biggest single thing is major equipment that’s very costly and critical to the quality of what’s delivered in health care in the hospital,” he said.
Over the weekend, Maritimers donated money over the phone and on-line to purchase items like incubators, SMART pumps (an automated prescription dispenser) and fund programs like Child Life that helps children and youth cope with their circumstances through play.
