No extended World Cup hours for Halifax bars

Some Halifax bars took a kick at it, but they will not be allowed to have extended hours during the FIFA World Cup.
The World Cup starts Friday, and four Halifax bars have asked for extended hours. However unlike in Toronto where bars asked to open early for the month-long tournament, bars in Halifax wanted extended late hours.
“Opening is not so big, but for the opening in extensive hours late at night,that’s when probably most of the operators here would be interested in,” says Gordon Stewart of the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia.
Bars in Nova Scotia are already allowed to serve beer in the mornings.
Jeremy White with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission says they’ve already responded to the bars — and the answer is ‘no’.
“In each case, they were reviewed and found that they did not demonstrate a sufficient benefit to the community,” says White.
White says besides that, they don’t usually grant extended hours for an event that lasts as long as the World Cup does, which is a month long.
White says the bars can appeal, if they so choose, to try and extend hours for certain matches.
